Barangaroo South is one of Sydney's largest mixed-use regeneration projects. We co-created a meanwhile architectural installation along the 170m waterfront, partnering with Foolscap. The structure was clad with 100% recycled and natural materials which could be disassembled and repurposed.

Design Strategy
Over two years, working integrally with Lendlease and Foolscap we oversaw a temporary waterfront circular installation come to life spanning public realm, hospitality retail, cowork, culture, play areas, art, edible gardens and entertainment along this linear site. The design strategy responded to the dynamic construction phases of the $6bn precinct and gave Sydney a first public view and relationship with Barangaroo South — setting the frame for what was to come.

Design System
The design system is based on prefabricated wall elements using 100% circular materials and demountable structures. Kitchens were housed in containers and returned to suppliers at project end.

Forms were based on the undulating crags and rock edges of Sydney's harbour. We resolved the materials approach with Foolscap, Lendlease and sub-contractors, and oversaw detailing for disassembly and validation of acoustics, structural and fire tests by CSIRO. The design enabled the integration of multiple uses and functions as part of the one modular system — a working precinct built at human scale, testing urban and sustainable innovation.

Gadigal Country
"Barangaroo is named in remembrance of a woman who was highly influential in the early years of European colonisation. Barangaroo was a member of the Cammeraigal clan of the Eora Nation and second wife to Bennelong. She is remembered as one of the key Aboriginal leaders in the late 1700s and as a powerful woman of great integrity and resilience." Lendlease
